Great Barrington and The Berkshires are Wonderful!
Star Rating - 3/17/2019
My wife and I moved to the area with our 2 month old baby after living most of our lives in Colorado and we could not be happier with our decision. Great Barrington and the Southern Berkshires are the perfect place to live. We are surrounded by beautiful nature and have all of the amenities we need. The are green mountains and perfect rivers and lakes everywhere here. From hiking, skiing, tennis, swimming, fishing, snowshoeing, disc golf, rock climbing, ice skating, soccer, bird watching, farmers markets, sledding, and leaf peeping we never run out of free things to do outside year round. We are also in the middle of an amazing arts and culture scene with Tanglewood musical concerts, Jacobs Pillow Dance, Shakespeare & Company, The Norman Rockwell Museum, Berkshire Theatre Group, Berksire Botanical Gardens, and more all nearby and all are either free for locals or have free local days. The food and restaurants are amazing too, catering to the weekenders from New York and Boston. Its small town living with big city amenities and culture, everything you could want or need is here. Great schools, libraries, parks and playgrounds for the kids. We have warm sunny summers for hanging out at the lake, the most colorful and vibrant falls, snowy cozy winters to get in the holiday spirit, and bright blossoming springs. It really is a special four season place. We have traveled to many places all around the country and world and I can confidently say there is no better place to live for a young family. We love it here!!!

Most who disagree grew up or have lived here but cannot afford to buy a home or rent because of sky high prices. No real inventory of affordable rentals. Most restaurants are prohibitive. Stores downtown are off limits to average people. It’s not the vibrant welcoming towns. Even longtime weekenders don’t recognize it as it’s beyond their budgets. Yes there are a handful of cheaper places to eat and shop but very limited options. This has created a divide in the town. Just driving through the town on weekends is a challenge. The town income from marijuana sales is NOT being used to improve the physical plant and curriculum of our high school nor have taxes been lower. We love this town but it’s largely unrecognizable to the lovely special community based town it once was. The designation of among the best small town in America is sadly a myth from a magazine article.
